What to know about roof edge protection
Dry verge protects the exposed ends of roof tiles at the gable. A dry ridge system secures the ridge line without relying on a traditional mortar bed. They solve different problems, and the right system depends on the roof covering, its condition and the manufacturer’s compatibility requirements.
When to ask for a roof-edge inspection
- Mortar is cracking or falling from the verge or ridge
- Tiles are loose, displaced or vulnerable at exposed edges
- You want to discuss a mechanically fixed alternative to mortar
- You are replacing a roof and want roof-edge detailing assessed
Common questions
What is the difference between dry verge and dry ridge?
Dry verge units protect the gable edges of a tiled roof. A dry ridge system mechanically secures and weathers the ridge tiles along the top. Some roofs need one, the other, or neither; an inspection helps establish that.
Can dry verge be fitted to any roof?
Not automatically. The tile profile, battens, roof condition and verge detail must be suitable for the specified system. Slate, tile and some older roofs may require a different approach.
Does dry ridge mean my roof will never need maintenance?
No roofing system is completely maintenance-free. Mechanically fixed ridge systems remove reliance on a mortar bedding, but periodic inspections after severe weather are still sensible.
Will a dry verge system fix a leak?
Only if the defect actually relates to the verge and the proposed repair addresses its cause. Water can enter through flashing, tiles, valleys or other details, so diagnosis should come first.
